In September, Ecometrix joined forces with Egis, a global leader in architecture, consulting, construction engineering, operations, and mobility services. Sharing the same core values when it comes to growth, excellence, and expertise, it represents an important milestone for both the business and its clients.

As our Senior Vice President and National Director, Environment, Elizabeth Haack, said, “joining Egis gives us access to the existing Egis environmental team in Canada, which is only going to allow us to expand on the services we can provide.”

Recently, the result of that collective growth was realized at a mine site with a tailings management facility in Timmins, Ontario, where Ecometrix has been working for several years providing geochemistry and hydrogeology expertise, closure planning, environmental effects monitoring, and aquatic monitoring.

As part of an additional component to characterize groundwater conditions, our experts have installed a number of groundwater monitoring wells to support the mine’s existing network.

This sort of sampling is important for the client as it evaluates whether the mine site is experiencing any movement of seepage from the tailings area into groundwater. Doing so helps create a complete picture of what’s happening and, if there is migration, what potential environmental implications and mitigations strategies may be needed. The monitoring is also part of the Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) process.

The team at Egis has complementary skills to ours, and we were able to bring them in and deliver this seamlessly for the success of both the project and the client.

When additional characterization was needed quickly and efficiently, our experts collaborated with Egis experts to utilize our Environmental Intelligence process and get the job done.

“Because of a challenge often encountered in environmental work—the weather—our first field crew was not able to complete all the work planned,” says Jonathan Keizer, Senior Hydrogeological Engineer. “We were looking to get a second crew on site as quickly as possible and reached out to our colleagues at Egis. They were able to step in and complete the monitoring and sampling we needed.”

Alongside the groundwater sampling, the collaboration also saw the completion of rising and falling head tests that analyze water levels and generate a measure of hydraulic conductivity.

While the fieldwork is now complete, the project in Timmins is ongoing. “The team at Egis has complementary skills to ours, and we were able to bring them in and deliver this seamlessly for the success of both the project and the client,” Keizer says.

“This was a great first step on collaborating. It was seamless, and this is something we expect to continue and build on both with this project and more in the future."
