Ecometrix at Tailings & Mine Waste 2025

Our Senior Hydrogeological Engineer, Jonathan Keizer, co-led a short course for those involved in the design, operation, management, or closure of tailings storage facilities.

Event date Nov 02, 2025 - Nov 05, 2025
Event location Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, Banff
Jonathan Keizer, Senior Hydrogeological Engineer Jonathan Keizer, Senior Hydrogeological Engineer

The course, presented alongside Lindsay Robertson of Elemental Geoscience, introduced the guidance behind tailings storage facility (TSF) closures, the role of the closure plan at all stages of TSF design, and options for water quality management at closure. It’s titled The Role of Water Quality in the Pursuit of Responsible TSF Closure and took place on Nov. 2, 2025.

The course was ideal for engineers, geoscientists, and management that wanted to better understand the value of a multidisciplinary team in closure design and familiarize themselves with the tools and approaches to integrating water quality management with TSF closure needs.

The event itself was hosted by the University of Alberta Geotechnical Centre, and is one of the most respected and established mining conferences in the world. Taking place annually, it brings together students, professionals, and practitioners.

Throughout the event, keynotes highlighted the importance of geochemistry and water management, joining our message of the importance of considering waste management approaches that mitigate between geotechnical and chemical stability.
